IPL Photo Facial

Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, also known as a photofacial, is a non-surgical way to enhance the color and texture of your skin. This treatment can help reverse some of the visible damage caused by sun exposure, known as photoaging, typically seen on the face, neck, hands, or chest. By heating the skin, IPL prompts the body to eliminate unwanted cells, addressing various skin concerns simultaneously. Post-IPL treatment, you might notice a more even skin tone, leading to a youthful appearance, with a quick recovery due to the targeted light treatment. IPL is most effective for individuals with fair or light brown skin; consult with a dermatologist for concerns such as acne, birthmarks, stretch marks, liver spots, broken blood vessels, brown spots, dark spots from hormonal changes, discolored skin, fine wrinkles, freckles, redness from rosacea, scars, spider veins, and unwanted hair.

How Many IPL Treatments Are Required?

While most patients see results within 10-21 days after their first IPL treatment, we often recommend that patients undergo a series of treatments to achieve optimal results.

Joules MedSpa recommends spacing your IPL treatments about four weeks apart. We follow this schedule to align with the body's natural cell turnover. Since a skin cell lives approximately 28 days, and IPL treatments speed up that process, the four-week schedule allows the cells to turn over and the skin to recover.

By the four-week mark, the skin should be back into its normal state and ready for a new treatment.

While the number of IPL treatments necessary varies by client, most clients benefit from three to five treatments to see younger, evenly toned skin.

IPL results are permanent. However, the skin remains susceptible to additional damage from sun exposure. Therefore, many patients choose to maintain their results by attending one or two IPL treatments yearly after their initial series.

What Areas Can Benefit from IPL Treatment?

IPL treatments refine the skin's texture and fade or even eliminate discoloration in the skin. The main skin concerns treated through IPL treatment include:

  • Sun damage

  • Broken capillaries

  • Aging

  • Acne

  • Rosacea

  • Wrinkles

  • Fine lines

Although most patients choose IPL treatments on their faces, you can also safely target skin concerns on the neck, chest, shoulders, back, arms, hands, and legs. If you're experiencing sun damage or skin concerns in multiple body areas, you can use IPL to restore your skin entirely.

Since IPL treatment uses various wavelengths, it's an ideal option for large areas of the skin to obtain a uniformly clear, youthful look.

Are IPL Treatments Painful?

IPL treatments are one of the safest, light-based facial treatments. Patients who undergo these procedures typically experience little to no pain. However, some particularly sensitive clients report a mild, brief, stinging pain, no worse than a flick of a rubber band on their skin.

Is the Recovery from IPL Treatment Fast and Easy?

The downtime from a IPL treatment is minimal. Immediately after your treatment, your skin may appear flushed. This reaction is entirely normal. Since IPL treatments use different wavelengths to target different conditions, the recovery period may differ based on your concern.

For example, patients undergoing IPL treatments to target redness, broken or dilated capillaries, or rosacea may see redness and slight swelling after their treatment. Those reactions often last around 24 hours or slightly longer for patients with sensitive skin.

The recovery from IPL treatment is typically fast and easy. Within 10-21 days after the first IPL treatment, the skin will look and feel smoother and more even. Subsequent treatments dramatically reduce redness, hyperpigmentation, freckles, and fine lines and wrinkles.

What Are the Best Ways to Maintain IPL Results?

The most important way to care for your skin after your IPL treatments is to avoid sun exposure and apply a high-quality, high SPF sunscreen to your treated areas daily.

In the days after your treatment, avoid irritating the skin with harsh cleansers, exfoliants, hot showers, or massages. When you discuss your treatment goals with the expert team at Joules MedSpa, we will also go over individualized skin care instructions to protect your IPL results.
